Eggs to dye for...
The word pysanky is derived from the verb pysaty, or "to write." My pysanky eggs are made in the Eastern European tradition of heating beeswax inside a kistka tool and using the tool to write upon the surface of the egg. This is done in a resist method, similar to batik. The eggs are then placed into a dye bath in color stages, typically working from the lightest to the darkest color consecutively until the final design motif is achieved. Finally the beeswax is removed from the surface of the egg, the egg is emptied of its contents, cleaned, dried, and varnished. True pysanky eggs are never painted.
